Nokia Asha 201 camera review !

The Nokia Asha 201 was built for those that love to socialise and have fun. Part of that experience, Nokia says is the ability to catch fun moments on film. The entry-level Series 40 Nokia Asha 201 has a 2-megapixel camera for doing so. Let’s take a look at how it performs.

Nokia Asha 201 review (hardware)

Let’s get one thing out of the way. The Nokia Asha 201 was never built for photography experts in the same way the Nokia N8 or Nokia 808 PureViewis, but we all love to take photos. The Nokia Asha 201 has a 2-megapixel camera that snaps photos at a 1200 x 1600 resolution, so we’re talking the basics here. The Asha 201 does try to make the most of what it can do.

The Nokia Asha 201 has a 4x digital zoom which can be adjusted by holding up and down on the directional button in the middle of the phone. You can also zoom in and out using the J and  U keys on the QWERTY keypad – although expect images to be very grainy when doing so. You’re better off not zooming in. Instead try getting in closer to your subjects. The camera is fixed focus, too, which doesn’t help when trying for clear, stable shots, and the 2.4-inch screen doesn’t give you much room to preview them.

That pretty much sets the tone for the all-round performance. Indoor scenes are especially difficult to grab a good photo from unless the scene is very well lit. Colours can appear washed out. Outdoor shots are the way to go. they are much clearer, and filled with a lot more detail.

The Nokia Asha 201 makes the best of the situation. There are some neat little, if typical photo effects. Effects include sepia, greyscale and negative. That said, the effects work really, considering how basic the camera is.

The option to place a grid over the view also helps you take better photos by helping you position the camera for a better composition. You can also set the white balance and tinker with the settings to cope with bright and dark conditions, but we’re still talking very basic performance here.

For a 2-megapixel camera, the Nokia Asha 201 has more than its share of features, which it uses to make the most of what it can do. As a camera phone to be used for sending quick snaps to friends phones, it’s a decent little camera phone that you could still say is one of the most well-equipped 2-megapixel ones out there. The Nokia Asha 201 won’t challenge any of the top camera phones, but it was never meant to.
